Protecting Comic Book Trade Paperbacks

To a comic book collector, a trade paperback (TPB) is a thick comic bound with a cardstock cover. These are usually the same width and height as current comic books, but are thicker than traditional comics as they have significantly more pages. A TPB might be a series of comic books or a given story arc, originally published as individual comics that have been combined. A “graphic novel” might classify as TPB, but a graphic novel could be larger or have a hardback cover. The term “omnibus” refers to an even larger bound collection of comics which were previously published as individual comics. An omnibus is more likely to have a hardback cover, and hence larger than “current comic” width and height.

For collectors who want to protect their trade paperbacks from the elements, BCW offers bags and boards. As TPBs are thicker than traditional comics, understanding what size of bags and boards are needed can be confusing if you don’t have lots of samples for testing. Below are common examples of TPBs to help you determine what bags and boards you need for your collection.

BCW only recommends polypropylene bags for these thicker comic books, as poly bags are flexible and can easily wrap to the depth of the TPB. Mylar bags are not a great solution for TPBs, as the Mylar is less flexible and will not wrap around the trade paperbacks properly.

Trade paperbacks in silver age bags

The trade paperbacks shown above are a common size. They’re “current” width and height, and their depth (thickness) ranges from 1/8″ to 1/4″. For their protection, we recommend Current Backing Boards, along with Resealable Silver Age Comic Book Bags. While the Silver Bags are larger than the Current Boards, the bags get filled by the thick TPBs, so the end result is a perfect fit.

Protect and Organize Your Graded Comic Books

To grade comic books, trusted companies such as the Certified Guaranty Company (CGC) and the Comic Book Certification Service (CBCS) will evaluate comic books, grade them on a 1 to 10 scale, and encapsulate each comic in a rigid plastic frame, called a slab. A grade of 10 is a flawless comic, but that grade is rarely awarded. These comics will be protected for years to come, and a graded comic will have a higher secondary market value. The obvious negative of getting a comic slabbed is you cannot view the interior pages without breaking the slab, and the risk of damaging the comic in the process.

The Comic Book Bin Keeps Your Comics Upright

To store comic books and keep them safe, most collectors place each comic in an archival-safe bag along with a firm backing board to support the comic and protect the edges. The collection is then placed in a “short box”, holding about 150 bagged and boarded comics.

Storing comics has always had a challenge keeping the comics upright when the box is not full. If the is box is completely full, there’s no problem as the comics naturally keep themselves upright with the ends of the box supporting them. However, if the box is only partially full, the comics can topple over like a row of books without a bookend. Collectors can easily solve this problem by placing some comics sideways in the box or using another object as a bookend inside the box. Nonetheless, this issue has always been annoying to collectors.

The BCW Comic Book Bin solves this problem by keeping a partial collection upright at all times. The Bin is made from molded polypropylene panels that are snapped together (see the the second video below). This manufacturing process allows the Bin to have several features not possible with the traditional cardboard short comic box. The Bin uses special Comic Bin Partitions that fit into evenly spaced notches. The Comic Book Bin comes with one Partition. This Partition is movable, so you can use it as a bookend to keep a small collection of comics upright. As your collection grows, you can shift the Partition to the next slot, and so on, until your Comic Book Bin is full. If you want to fill all of the available slots with a Partition, packs of 3 extra Partitions can be purchased separately.

While you may find the Comic Book Bin assembled at your local comic shop, they are normally unassembled, coming in five panels and one partition. The panels snap together to make a sturdy bin. Please review the video below to see the simplest sequence to assemble the Bin.

The Comic Book Bin was designed to hold Current and Silver Age comic books in bags and boards. This includes Current and Silver BCW Archivals (Mylar bags) that are wider than normal polypropylene comic bags. The Bin is also large enough to hold Current or Silver Comic Book Toploaders. BCW Comic Book Dividers also fit under the lid.

Golden Age comics and graded comic books are too large for the Comic Book Bin. While BCW is considering making a Graded Comic Bin, our cardboard Graded Comic Boxes are our best solution for CGC/CBCS slabs at this time. We are also considering a Long Comic Book Bin, but at this time our cardboard Long Comic Boxes or corrugated plastic Long Comic Book Boxes are our best options. For magazines or Golden Age comics, our cardboard Magazine Box is BCW’s best storage solution. If you want to lobby for other products, or suggest product improvements, please comment below. What Size of Bags and Boards Do I Need to Protect my Comic Books?

While today’s comic books are normally 6 5/8″ wide by 10 3/16″ high (Current size), these dimensions were not always standardized. Throughout the history of comic books, publishers have made comics is different sizes (learn more from this article). For the purpose of bag and board sizes, BCW has simplified the sizes into three groups, or ages.

  1. Golden Age – circa 1938 to 1955
  2. Regular/Silver Age – circa 1956 to 1969
  3. Current/Modern Age – circa 1970 to present

To keep comic books preserved, they’re normally stored in bags with boards and you’ll want to get bags and boards sized appropriately for your collection. If you’re not sure what size of bags and boards you need, please measure your comics, and compare with the sizes listed below.

Recommended Receiving Procedure for BCW Wholesale Customers

When BCW wholesale customers place a sizeable order, their products are normally shipped on a pallet by a freight company. We call this LTL (Less Than Truckload) as the freight truck likely has many pallets for various pick-ups and deliveries at any given time. BCW’s Shipping Department works hard to prepare these LTL orders to make sure they arrive to their destination safely. We also work closely with the freight companies to make sure they are handling these pallets professionally. From time-to-time, mistakes are made by the BCW staff, or our freight delivery partners. We want to correct these issues as quick as possible so your business gets the products you need, or your BCW account is credited accordingly. Assistance from our wholesale partners is essential to help us correct these issues.

When receiving freight shipments, your signature on the delivering carrier’s Bill of Lading (BOL) constitutes acceptance of the merchandise “as is”. If you do not inspect the shipment before signing, or note the BOL “Subject to count and inspection”, you may be waiving our mutual right to collect on a loss or damage claim. Remember, once you sign, the product and the responsibility are yours.

RECOMMENDED RECEIVING PROCEDURE

Inspect, examine and count your delivery as it is unloaded.

  1. Any and all shortages or damaged items must be written down on the BOL. Note the item(s) that are visibly damaged or missing on the BOL before you sign it.
  2. Open cartons if there is the slightest doubt that the merchandise could be damaged. Any damaged or missing product must be noted on the BOL at the time of delivery or your claim may be denied.
  3. Do not be intimidated by the driver. The driver cannot leave until the BOL is signed (regardless of how much of a hurry they are in, etc.). If the driver is unwilling to wait while you inspect the shipment, always sign “Subject to count and inspection.”

DAMAGED OR MISSING PRODUCT AT THE TIME OF DELIVERY

When damage to, or loss of, contents of a shipment is discovered at time of delivery you must immediately;

  1. Document the shortage and/or photograph the damage and note the shortage and/or damage on the BOL.
  2. Call your BCW representative to report the problem. Then, e-mail the photos, a copy of the signed BOL, and any other documentation to [email protected]. If we prepaid the freight with the carrier, we will begin the damage claim.

CONCEALED DAMAGE OR MISSING PRODUCT AFTER DELIVERY

When damage to, or loss of, contents of a shipment is discovered that could not have been determined at time of delivery you must immediately;

  1. Document and photograph the packaging and the damage. You must keep the packaging until told by BCW or the delivering carrier to return or dispose of the item(s).
  2. Call your BCW representative to report the problem. Then, e-mail the photos, a copy of the BOL, and any other documentation to [email protected]. If we prepaid the freight with the carrier, we will begin the concealed damage claim.

Remember, at this point, you’ve signed the BOL free and clear, or possibly “Subject to count and inspection.” So, the sooner you can inspect the goods and report any concealed damage or missing product, the better the chances of collecting on the claim. In accordance with National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) regulations, concealed damage claims must be reported to the carrier within five calendar days of the date of delivery.

FURTHER MEASURES THAT MAY HELP IN THE CLAIMS PROCESS

  1. Take photographs of the damaged goods while still on the carrier’s truck if obvious mis-handling is evident.
  2. Call your BCW representative immediately, preferably with the driver still present.
  3. Be sure to keep a copy of the BOL noting the damage and/or shortage with the driver’s signature.

There are many things that can happen to shipments between the time they leave our facility and arrive at your store. Therefore we are asking you to do a small, but critically important amount of work to protect us both. The BOL is our only documentation of the condition of a shipment when it arrives at your place of business. Without this proof, we cannot effectively hold carriers accountable for damaged or missing items.

Printed Comic Book Boxes

Although white comic boxes are the standard for protecting and storing comic book collections, there are now several great options for colorful, printed comic book boxes. Until recently, finding a printed comic box was rare.  A Little Shop of Comics in New Jersey had the Marvel box seen below in their collection. This Marvel Comic Book Collection Box was offered by the Collectors Marketing Corp. in 1989.

BCW Supplies now prints several designs of comic book boxes. These are all based on the BCW Short Box which can hold 150-175 bagged and boarded comic books and are made from a strong cardboard with double thickness on the ends and bottom of the box.

BCW produces a full line of printed comic boxes. We not only use original designs, but also collaborate with publishers to make boxes based on their properties. We continue to add more designs, so make sure to check the full list of BCW printed Short Comic Boxes.

Four Methods for Displaying Comics on a Wall

BCW offers several options for displaying your favorite comics on the wall. Which of the four methods below is best for your needs?

BCW Comic Book Toploaders
Current Size: 1-TLCH-COMIC | Silver Size: 1-TLCH-SIL | Golden Size: 1-TLCH-GOL
BCW Toploaders are designed for storing comics on a shelf or in a box, hence they do not have a hanging mechanism. However, with some simple MacGyvering, Comic Book Toploaders make an economical method for displaying comics on the wall. The simplest method is adhering a BCW Hang Tab on the back of the toploader and hanging over a flat tack or nail. Adhesive backed flat magnets or Velcro work great in many instances. You can also look in the hardware aisle at your local home center or craft store to find hanging systems from 3M and others.

The BCW Comic Book Frame is an attractive black frame with a glass front. Your comic is neatly displayed in a mat border you can easily access from the rear.

BCW Distributors Supporting Hobby Shops

Hobby shops are welcome to apply for a BCW wholesale account to get the selection, pricing, and shipping services needed for a profitable business, and then get their order directly from BCW Supplies. Shops can apply for a wholesale account. However, most shops are served by one or more industry distributors to acquire their inventory. These distributors are sometimes capable of offering a better price or more convenient delivery services.

Hobby shops can contact the distributors listed below to get BCW products. Some distributors carry a majority of BCW products, while others only offer products specific to their customers’ needs. Nonetheless, all BCW products are available to these distributors, so you can request your needs from them.

Dimensional Weight Shipping

Traditionally, shipping companies established delivery costs based on the weight of a package – the heavier the package, the more the shipping expense. However large packages that are lightweight are not profitable to the shipping companies since these light packages earn very little money while they take-up a lot of space in a truck. Hence a lot of fuel is spent to deliver fewer packages.

By January 1st, 2015, both UPS Ground and FedEx Ground will be charging for shipping based on billable weight. This includes shipments originating from BCW Supplies. There are two factors that determine the billable weight. The first is the weight of the package. The second factor is the package’s dimensional weight. The dimensional weight is the package’s density – how much it weighs for its height, length and depth. The shipping company then compares the package’s overall weight and the dimensional weight. Whichever value is greater is the package’s billable weight.

Worker measuring BCW package

Recording an accurate weight and dimensions of packages is key to efficient shipping.

These changes are expected to impact the shipping costs of BCW products. For example, a box of 200 unfolded BCW trading card boxes (1-BX-660) is lightweight (43.1-lbs.), yet has a relatively large size (5.16 cubic feet). The old shipping cost was based on the package’s overall weight, but the cost for the dimensional weight is greater. Therefore the billable weight for this example has increased.

In general, consumers will see shipping costs increase for large, yet lightweight goods. Smart hobby supply distributors and retailers will be able to use this change to their advantage. Because it will be more expensive for consumers to buy goods online, consumers will turn to their local hobby shop to purchase their hobby supplies.

For consumers ordering at www.bcwsupplies.com, users can select their delivery method and see the shipping costs before checking-out. UPS Ground is our default shipping service based on their cost and reliability to deliver goods on time and undamaged. BCW is constantly evaluating the price of our products, the shipping costs, and the potential delivery methods in order to provide the best products and service at the best price.

For BCW partners utilizing BCW’s Drop Shipping program, they should refer to BCW’s Wholesale Price Sheet (updated 12/1/14) to utilize the most up-to-date dimensional weight data to establish their shipping costs.

From more information regarding shipments from BCW Supplies, please view our Shipping Policy.
