Protecting a LaserDisc Collection

LaserDiscs were introduced to consumers in 1978. Although these disks are capable of higher-quality audio and video as compared to video tapes, they lost the popularity contest to the VHS tape format during the ’80s. However, some videophiles with collections from that era prize their LaserDisc collection.

LaserDiscs are the same size as 33 rpm records. As the data on LaserDiscs is not as compressed as the later DVD or Blue-ray formats, the LaserDiscs were often multiple 12” disks. This means LaserDiscs sometimes had gatefold jackets, similar to double LP records. This allows LaserDiscs jackets to have ample room for beautiful artwork from the movie.

As LaserDiscs are the same size as 33 rpm records, it’s easy to get supplies when you’re ready to protect and store your collection. See all of BCW’s Record Supplies to find outer jacket sleeves and inner sleeves to protect your LaserDiscs.

Don’t get LaserDiscs confused with VideoDiscs. LaserDiscs look like large DVDs. VideoDiscs are enclosed in a thin cartridge. VideoDiscs are larger than LaserDiscs and will not fit in 33 rpm record supplies.

BCW Card Boxes are Ideal for Model Trains

At BCW, we love it when hobbyists find uses for our products in ways we never envisioned. One great example comes from model train collectors. BCW has developed numerous corrugated boxes designed to protect trading cards. In the hands of a model train collector, these boxes are perfect for storing and shipping miniature trains. Model trains come in several scales that fit nicely in the various sizes of BCW boxes, leaving just the right amount of space to add bubble wrap or tissue.

John from The Virginia Foundry and Model Works stated, “I make and sell HO scale kits and ship them in your boxes. I have made literally hundreds of shipments in your boxes with not a single claim of any damage due to the box. … They’re just great for this purpose and stand up admirably to any post office abuse. And many of my kits have been shipped overseas with the same excellent results.”

What Size of Bags and Boards Do I Need to Protect my Comic Books?

While today’s comic books are normally 6 5/8″ wide by 10 3/16″ high (Current size), these dimensions were not always standardized. Throughout the history of comic books, publishers have made comics is different sizes (learn more). For the purpose of bag and board sizes, BCW has simplified the sizes into three groups, or ages.

  • Golden Age – circa 1938 to 1955
  • Regular/Silver Age – circa 1956 to 1969
  • Current/Modern Age – circa 1970 to present

To keep comic books preserved, they’re normally stored in bags with boards and you’ll want to get bags and boards sized appropriately for your collection. If you’re not sure what size of bags and boards you need, please measure your comics.

Toploaders – Affordable Photo and Poster Protection

Toploading holders are an affordable method to protect and display photos, documents, posters, and other large art prints. These toploaders are made from a clear PVC which does not contain chemicals that will damage the enclosed prints.

Batman Lego Posters

BCW offers a range of sizes of toploaders. Below are the poster sizes in inches. You can view smaller sizes for cards, photos, and specialty items here.

8 x 10 8 x 12 8.5 x 11 8.5 x 14
9 x 12 10 x 15 11 x 14 11 x 15
11 x 17 12 x 18 13 x 19 14 x 17
16 x 20 18 x 24 20 x 24 22 x 28
24 x 30 24 x 36 29 x 43 30 x 40
32 x 43 12 x 36

Inserting documents into toploaders can be tricky if the document is glossy, as static electricity between the glossy document and the plastic prevent sliding the piece into the toploader. To help, blow into the toploader as you insert the document, creating a thin cushion of air between the glossy document and the plastic. Just make sure you don’t spit on the document.

BCW Toploaders are designed to store prints on a shelf or in a box, hence they do not have a hanging mechanism. If your goal is to display the print on a wall, a little MacGyvering is needed. For small to medium toploaders, you can adhere these hang tabs on the back of the toploaders. Adhesive backed flat magnets or Velcro work great in many instances. You can also look in the hardware aisle at your local home center or craft store to find hanging systems from 3M and others. For the larger posters shown above, we drilled small holes in the upper corners of the toploaders and hung them with small finishing nails.

Importing BCW Products on Your CrystalCommerce Site

CrystalCommerce is a system for hobby shops to manage their inventory and market their products to customers in their brick and mortar store, e-commerce site, and affiliate marketplaces. This system was originally developed to sell Magic: The Gathering cards, but other products such as comics and board games are listed in the CrystalCommerce system. Most of BCW’s gaming supplies are already loaded in the CrystalCommerce network. This means the roughly 875 hobby shops that use CrystalCommerce can quickly import BCW products from their CrystalCommerce admin page and start selling!
